ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews extinguished a fire at an apartment complex on Eagle Ranch Road NW Sunday evening—three residents were displaced and are receiving help from management and family while repairs are planned, with no injuries reported.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nate Bernard, the Daily Lobo managing editor who ensured clear, correct coverage, is stepping down after three years with the paper. Bernard, known for his local reporting and impactful stories, leaves a legacy of openness & kindness that has shaped the community’s news and dialogue.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM is celebrating its inspiring graduates as it prepares for spring commencement; the university spotlights resilient journeys in public health & business & honors diverse academic success.  University of New Mexico
  • Eric Barker, a UNM president candidate, spoke Monday about modernizing the university while keeping tuition affordable and honoring its heritage (he emphasized technology and science). Two candidates will address campus, with one speaking today at 1:15 p.m. and the other on Wednesday, to present their visions.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Rachel Swanteson-Franz returned to UNM School of Law (where she played as a child) to earn her juris doctorate and the Salazar Award for highest GPA in her second year. She accepted a one-year fellowship with the Clean Air Task Force and plans to encourage students to explore varied interests.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Irrigation deliveries to Corrales have been halted because low Rio Grande levels made pumps inoperable, lengthening wait times for water among farmers. The Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District is offering a temporary fallowing program (deadline May 15) amid a warm winter and low snowpack.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Transit Director Leslie Keener announced that starting May 16, ABQ RIDE Forward will expand service in the South Valley by creating a microtransit zone with door-to-door rides on new Route 52 – connecting key spots and replacing Route 51.  The Paper.
  • Federal delegates introduced the Caja del Rio Protection Act on May 8 to permanently shield the plateau near Santa Fe from privatization + the law seeks to create a Special Management Area to preserve cultural practices and natural corridors, and it now moves to Congress.  The Paper.

HEALTH NEWS

  • The New Mexico Health Care Authority is building the Center for Rural Health Sustainability & Innovation to help rural providers offer better care to residents who drive long hours for treatment. The HCA said vendors must submit proposals by June 4 as part of a federally funded five-year program.  KUNM

SPORTS NEWS

  • Men’s basketball coach Eric Olen signed a five-year extension to lead the Lobos through the 2030-31 season. UNM Athletics said his leadership drove a 26-11 season and a semifinal NIT run (underscoring his impact on the program).  KOAT
  • After spring practices ended at University Stadium, Coach Jason Eck said the Lobos faced a close quarterback contest (with Oregon transfer Luke Moga and redshirt freshman Toa Fa’avae challenging injured QB Jack Layne in rehab) while the defense created turnovers and redshirt freshman Cameron Mathews impressed with an 88-yard run.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
