CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Hundreds of migrants have been charged with illegal entry and trespassing on restricted military land after over 100,000 acres near the border were transferred to the Army — 209 cases were filed in New Mexico and Judge Gregory Wormuth will decide the migrants' fate soon. KOAT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Evany Lopez, an art history major, won the UNM Excellence in Undergraduate Arts Research Award and is a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow; she presented research on protest art that raises awareness about femicide during International Women’s Day — Christopher Tran earned an honorable mention for his project that mixes art history with creative methods. - ➤ After losses from wildfires in spring 2022, NM fire victims saw a federal judge award compensation to a dozen Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon victims when FEMA had offered very low payments. A new lawsuit was filed for Cerro Pelado victims alleging that Forest Service negligence in monitoring burn plans left them without aid—lawyers say relief has been long overdue as Congress struggles to act. - ➤ On Friday, New Mexico Voices for Children released a report with five steps to improve SNAP and help protect families from federal cuts + the U.S. House Agriculture Committee is holding a markup hearing today to discuss the proposed changes. Source NM
- ➤ Eddy Aragon, a former Albuquerque mayoral candidate and radio host, announced his campaign to run for Congress in New Mexico’s second district in 2026 — he said he will focus on issues like illegal immigration, crime and education to challenge incumbent Gabe Vasquez. Sandoval Signpost
- ➤ On Monday, attorneys in the 12-year Rio Grande water dispute said they were cautiously optimistic about a settlement and expected documents to be signed later that day. They requested that the court cancel the June 9 trial— the parties hope this move will finalize the agreement and avoid further litigation. Source NM
- ➤ A U.S. District Judge ended federal oversight of the Albuquerque Police Department on May 12—after over a decade of DOJ monitoring—and the department now has full local control to adjust its practices. APD officials said the change comes as a result of long-term reforms initiated when the oversight began in 2012. KOAT

- ➤ A nonprofit hospice home in Downtown Albuquerque is offering free, 24/7 end-of-life care to unhoused and low income residents. Dorothy Marquez spent the last month there with her brother Gerald Moya, who recalled childhood memories along with his lime green 1964 Chevrolet Impala lowrider—demonstrating the facility’s compassionate care.
