COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albuquerque will begin summer construction on a one half mile trail connecting Old Town to BioPark for walkers and cyclists — part of the city's seven mile Rail Trail Loop linking downtown, Sawmill, and Bosque Trail. Officials expect completion by next spring at a cost of 3 to 5 million dollars.  KOAT
  • UNM’s Greek community raised a record $57,000 for Storehouse New Mexico during Greek Week from March 23 to 28. Nearly 700 students from 19 chapters also collected 8,660 pounds of food and volunteered 500 hours across Albuquerque to support the nonprofit.  University of New Mexico

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Southwest Airlines flight from Albuquerque bound for Baltimore made an emergency landing in Tulsa Monday after its windshield cracked midflight. Passengers disembarked safely, and the plane taxied for several hours before plans to resume service Tuesday.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Albuquerque business leaders expressed disappointment when UNM did not advance billionaire Meg Whitman from the final round of candidates in its search for a new university president, & urged a reconsideration in letters to the institution.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Dr. Steve Goldstein (a finalist for UNM president) spoke Tuesday at the Student Union Building and pledged to support students, boost health sciences and champion diversity at UNM. Finalist Eric Link will visit campus today from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m.  Albuquerque Journal
  • UNM students redirected over 698 pounds of food from campus dining to support the Lobo Food Pantry in recent months, reducing waste and aiding students in need. The program, led by the UNM Food Recovery Network, will continue expanding its partnerships this spring (data from March-April).  University of New Mexico
  • Jasmine Hobbs from Grants will graduate with her Doctor of Nursing Practice from UNM College of Nursing this spring and start an advanced role at Cibola General Hospital. She credits her family & hospital experiences with inspiring her commitment to serve rural communities.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The New Mexico Water Quality Control Commission voted Tuesday to restart rulemaking on produced water that would let 13 counties use treated wastewater in construction, industry and agriculture. The board vote split 7 in favor, 4 against and 1 abstention, and a hearing will be scheduled soon.  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sam Bregman, the current 2nd Judicial District Attorney and gubernatorial candidate, said he will serve all New Mexicans during the June 2 primary, promising to back everyday citizens over the political class (known for his signature cowboy hat) in Albuquerque.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study finds that wastewater testing alerted local health officials last year to measles spread in Sandoval County five days before hospitals confirmed cases (giving officials extra time to prepare vaccines) and that NMDOH will maintain surveillance through 2029.  Source NM
