CRIME NEWS

  • KOAT crime expert Paul Szych warns that parents must store firearms in locked safes in bedroom closets and secure doors to stop children from accessing them (he recommends using biometric safes or barrel locks for emergencies and reminds parents of Bennie’s Law, signed in 2023, which holds them accountable for unsafe storage).  KOAT
  • Survivors of a 2023 protest shooting in Española filed lawsuits against county commissioners, the sheriff’s office and the county manager for failing to protect protestors during a protest over a planned Juan de Oñate statue—claiming officials ignored warnings of danger when a gunman shot a Native American man and threatened another.  Source NM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kamyrn Zachek, who studies economics and philosophy at UNM, benefited from the guidance of engineering professor Anjali Mulchandani during the Grand Challenge Undergraduate Water and Climate Science Communication Fellowship and grew in her research and writing skills. As she graduates this month and prepares for a law career, she credits her mentor's support for boosting her confidence.  University of New Mexico
  • Diana Martinez-Nava interpreted for her parents when she was young before graduating from UNM College of Pharmacy in May 2025. She will begin her residency at UT Health Science Center at San Antonio and plans to return to Albuquerque to help Latino and immigrant communities—using her bilingual skills to improve patient care.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Three investor-owned utilities explained wildfire prevention plans at a Public Regulation Commission workshop Thursday afternoon; they detailed ideas like turning off power in high-risk areas, adding fire detection cameras, and clearing more space around power lines. They will install weather stations—especially in parts with few stations—to better spot dangerous fire conditions and protect the community.  Sandoval Signpost

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A nonpartisan report by Observe New Mexico Elections found that the November 5 election ran smoothly with polls opening on time, equipment functioning properly and votes counted correctly, though same-day registration delays, improper voter identification at 12 sites and language access issues were noted. The report is based on observations by 160 site watchers across 29 counties (including 50 early voting observers covering 91 sites).  Sandoval Signpost
  • Rep. Catherine Cullen from Rio Rancho highlighted wins from her one 60-day session, including Senate Bill 70 that broadened racketeering laws to cover crimes like human trafficking, money laundering, child exploitation, drug trafficking, auto theft and fraud, and education bills that support career technical programs and teacher training. She will continue pushing to criminalize swatting and protect homeowners' property rights in upcoming sessions.  Sandoval Signpost
