COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After closing its longtime Northeast Heights location, ABQ Food Park will open its new spot at 2113 Eubank Blvd NE on May 23, where it plans to add permanent power, water & sewer hookups and host weekend events for families and vendors.  The Paper.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Festival Sefardí returns May 21 to 24 at Congregation Nahalat Shalom — offering four days of music, workshops, lectures and cultural events that celebrate Sephardic heritage in Albuquerque. Tickets cost $54 to $85 and full schedules are available online.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kingsley Nelson Jr., a chemical engineering major at the University of New Mexico, plans to complete his master’s degree in December while revitalizing student organizations like B.L.A.C.K. and Alpha Phi Alpha to build a supportive campus community.  University of New Mexico
  • STEM educator Shelly Gruenig founded R4 Creating to offer robotics and leadership programs to Albuquerque youth. Her nonprofit grew from a small workshop into community-supported after-school classes, summer camps, and competitions (helping children build confidence and learn vital STEM skills).  The Paper.
  • New Mexico launched free universal childcare for children from 6 weeks to 13 years old in 2025 as rising costs have strained family budgets nationwide. Local parents are now exploring nanny shares and community resources to help manage expenses.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews fought a small bosque fire that burned half an acre on the east side of the Rio Grande near the Los Lunas bridge Thursday afternoon; the Valencia County and Los Lunas fire departments quickly addressed spot fires to prevent further spread and kept structures safe.  KOAT
  • Conservation district managers warn that a portion of the Rio Grande north of the Rio Bravo bridge in South Valley will likely run dry in the next 5 to 10 days due to a record dry spring and low reservoir levels, so the city is relying on groundwater.  KUNM
  • On May 13, the congressional delegation urged public input to oppose a potential repeal of the Roadless Rule that protects millions of federal acres including Gila Wilderness (the Forest Service will soon release a draft rule that offers one last chance for comment).  Source NM

  • Candidates Villalobos and Martinez—key voices in District 37—discussed plans to boost local education and economic opportunity while calling for oversight on Project Jupiter during interviews with NM In Depth.   • State agencies are building early warning systems and sample kits to track the New World screwworm as infected livestock cases grow in northern Mexico near the border. Local ranchers (like Erica Valdez) say they worry this bug could raise beef prices and harm herd health.  Source NM
