BUSINESS NEWS

  • PNM’s parent company TXNM Energy reached an agreement Monday morning with Blackstone Infrastructure to support a transition to clean energy while keeping its headquarters and local employees in New Mexico. The deal is valued at over $11 billion—electric rates will continue to be set by the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission.  KOAT

CRIME NEWS

  • Yesterday, Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman said Operation Route 66 on Central Avenue led to 700 arrests over 90 days—including 232 for violating release conditions and seven homicide suspects—with law enforcement seizing 52 illegal firearms, over 35,000 fentanyl pills and 61 stolen vehicles to target drug trafficking and repeat offenders.  KOAT
  • Andy Doreste-Samuell was convicted Friday of vehicular homicide in an October 2023 street racing crash on Louisiana Northeast that killed Jenna Hamilton and another driver—police said the cars were speeding at 103 miles per hour and the crash seriously hurt two children and a 17-year-old passenger, with sentencing set for June 16.  KKOB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Violet Rising — emerging from the Rio Grande Valley three years ago — has won local and global praise for its sultry, psychedelic heavy rock sound and pro-human messages. The band, a favorite at The Launchpad and Sister Bar and a nominee for a New Mexico Entertainment Award, will release a full-length album and begin touring in September.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educators say thousands of students graduating this week need to learn vital skills such as budgeting, cooking, and independent studying to prepare for college and careers. APS has urged graduates to keep moving forward and attend welcome events—steps that help build connection and guide them toward their next chapter.  KOAT
  • UNM’s Earth and Planetary Sciences department is accepting applications for the free, week-long ESCAPE program running from Aug. 4 through 8 at Northrop Hall — where students learn Earth science analysis, Python programming and field methods to explore career paths — with a June 15 deadline.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New Mexico ended its old model and set up a new wildlife agency that protects more non-game animals with $10.5 million in new funding while also changing how its commissioners are chosen. Lawmakers in Utah and Oregon are planning similar funding and rule changes—though some hunters, anglers and renewable energy developers worry these moves may affect their interests.  Source NM
