  • Chicanos Por La Causa hosted a community assistance event for families seeking help with rent, utilities and parenting support. The event took place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at 2101 Mountain Road NW in Albuquerque.  KOAT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Albuquerque Hispano Chamber of Commerce chief Roberta Ricci, recognized as one of the 2026 Women Who Mean Business honorees, uses her hard-won experience to help local businesses tackle rising costs and staffing challenges; she recently secured a brick-and-mortar space for a coffee truck owner opening later in June.  The Paper.

CULTURE NEWS

  • UNM’s Global Education Office celebrated its annual International Festival today on campus, where international students from 109 countries hosted booths, prepared food, and offered live performances plus artisans showcased traditional crafts.   • Al Hurricane Jr., a beloved New Mexico music icon and son of the legendary Al Hurricane, died on Tuesday at age 66 as his family announced via Facebook (please respect their privacy); the community now remembers his lasting musical legacy.  KUNM
  • Chaco Canyon was named among America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as the All Pueblo Council of Governors announced Wednesday amid federal threats to revoke protections for (336,400 acres) of land.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM held a blessing ceremony at the site for its future Humanities & Social Sciences building; underground work begins early summer and construction starts in August while the building will open in spring 2029, featuring classrooms for ASL and Navajo and community spaces such as a kitchen and digital labs.  University of New Mexico
  • The University of New Mexico is awarding the 2026 Paul Bartlett Ré Peace Prize today from 1 to 2:30 p.m. MDT via Zoom — honoring professors, alumni and staff for their work in promoting peace and community healing. Recipients include Barbara Kurcaba Kunz, Sallie Downs, Mark Goldman and Layla Dehaiman.  University of New Mexico
  • Today at 9 a.m., Let's Talk New Mexico will focus on youth mentoring amid a shortage of volunteer mentors - examining how fewer trusted adults may affect teens avoiding drugs and pursuing higher education.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New ABQ Ride data shows safety calls dropped 21% while ridership increased 8% to 1.9 million rides. The shift to APD Transit Safety Officers reduced serious incidents — City Council recently rejected extra funding and placed them under oversight, and the department will present expanded safety measures on June 1.  The Paper.
  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an executive order urging communities to limit water use + fireworks amid record drought and 366 wildfires since the beginning of the year. Emergency spending has reached $137 million to help bolster wildfire response as the state faces a challenging fire season.  Albuquerque Journal
