CRIME NEWS

  • A 13-year-old was arrested after school staff found a loaded gun with a bullet in the chamber at Jimmy Carter Middle School on Tuesday—he was booked into a juvenile facility and charged with unlawful carrying on school property while it remains unknown where he obtained the weapon.  KOAT
  • A man charged with stabbing an 8-year-old girl's neck at Saggio's pizza restaurant pleaded not guilty to child abuse and other felony charges this week.  Albuquerque Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fish Stark, the new president of the American Humanist Association, will speak on May 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Albuquerque Museum about how humanism can offer community and purpose—he will also speak on May 25 at 1 p.m. in Santa Fe at Unitarian Universalist to share his views on humanist principles.  KUNM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A record 45 million people are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, and gas prices are projected to be around $3.08 per gallon — lower than last year's $3.58 average because of an unexpected oil production boost and new tariff uncertainty. AAA advises drivers to inspect their cars before the trip as flat tires, dead batteries, and engine problems could cause delays.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Professor Karen J. Leong is guiding UNM students to research the untold stories of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities in New Mexico in her course, Making History: The Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Experience. The students use local archives and museum resources and will present their findings on a new website—Making New Mexico History—as part of AANHPI Heritage Month.  University of New Mexico

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Mexico researchers reported that shigellosis spread from humans to primates at the BioPark Zoo between May 2021 and November 2023—resulting in six primate deaths. They said the bacteria from feces was passed through contact with contaminated surfaces, food or water.  KKOB
