COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albuquerque outdoor pools and splash pads open today for Memorial Day weekend as swim passes and wristbands become available and full summer programming including swim lessons starts June 8. All pools will open this summer except Sunport Pool (closed for repairs), with temporary changes at select facilities.  KOAT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • New Mexico State Police identified fentanyl and meth at a Mountainair residence that led to three deaths and about 24 hospitalizations, including 18 first responders, and cleanup crews will begin work Friday.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of New Mexico professor Olga Flora made her Carnegie Hall solo debut as a mezzo-soprano in Mozart’s Coronation Mass — a milestone that enriches both her international career and her teaching by bringing real-world experience to students.  University of New Mexico
  • A new report (Being a Good Relative) shows that Native students face economic and housing challenges and recommends a holistic approach to support academic achievement with stronger community ties. The study, conducted by One Generation with Albuquerque Public Schools, was published May 22.  KUNM
  • Albuquerque Public Schools partners with New Mexico United to host a college and career fair today at 5:30 p.m. before the 7 p.m. match. The event features 20 vendors including the University of New Mexico, Sandia National Labs, Nusenda and trade unions, with $4 per ticket benefiting the APS Foundation.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State and federal agencies are urging boaters to clean, drain and dry their boats this summer to prevent invasive mussels. Inspection stations will operate at Navajo Lake, Elephant Butte Lake, Ute Lake and Conchas Lake + ensuring safe waters for local wildlife.  KOAT
  • The last known captive Sacramento Mountains checkerspot caterpillar died at the ABQ BioPark's Bugarium—raising fears that one of New Mexico’s rarest butterflies may soon vanish from the wild near Cloudcroft. Researchers are surveying mountain meadows to understand how changing habitats affect local species.  KOAT
  • Oracle announced this week that it will fund the assessment and capping of 10 inactive wells in southern New Mexico - including plugging the two that emit the most methane - and support local scholarships to train specialists in partnership with the Well Done Foundation.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Mexico officials launched DETECT — a statewide dashboard that combines energy production, emissions, infrastructure, and economic trends data for researchers, policymakers, businesses, and residents. Developed with the NM Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department and NM Institute of Mining and Technology, it is now open for public feedback.  KOAT
  • New Mexico in Focus reviews issues on fracking wastewater reuse, NHCC labor rights, police oversight, a former NM Congressman’s BLM nomination and local hantavirus research. The program airs Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 7 a.m. on NMPBS 5.1.  University of New Mexico
