- ➤ An Albuquerque police officer was charged Friday with striking and critically injuring a pedestrian on a motorcycle Thursday evening — he fled the scene after the incident. Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ Two students were arrested on Thursday after allegedly bringing a handgun to Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, marking the second time this week a firearm was reported at an Albuquerque school. Albuquerque Journal

- ➤ UNM anthropologist Matthew Schmader spent 20 years researching America’s first war that began in 1540 when Coronado’s troops arrived in the Rio Grande Valley and sparked the Tiguex War. His book, Uncovering America’s First War, was published by UNM Press in late March and includes evidence such as rocks thrown from rooftops—details that explain how Pueblo people defended their homes. - ➤ Along Buck Jackson Road, upside-down boots on fence posts honor oil workers who worked in harsh conditions across New Mexico’s Permian Basin—where dangerous jobs and long hours sometimes led to severe injuries and health risks. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ New Mexico Environment Department proposed the Clean Transportation Fuel Program to create a state-run marketplace for clean fuels that will let producers sell credits to lower emissions—public comments will begin in mid-June and hearings will be scheduled for this fall. Source NM
- ➤ State wildlife officials released the new State Action Wildlife Plan this month which now lists over 500 species needing help—including bees, salamanders and jaguars—to protect them from warming climate and development pressures. Public comments will be accepted until June 9 before the plan is reviewed by the State Game Commission later this fall. Source NM

- ➤ NM health officials reported Friday that four new measles cases in Sandoval County raised the state total to 78 with possible exposure at Walmarts in Albuquerque and Santa Fe — officials urged that children get vaccinated earlier — as free vaccines are available at state offices. Source NM
- ➤ On Friday, Sandoval County health officials reported two new measles cases in vaccinated adults—raising the total to six infections since May 15. Albuquerque Journal
