  • Albuquerque Gold Star Mother Joyce Paulsen visited a WWI grave in France on May 17 (honoring fallen soldier Tomas Herrera and her son) and collected dirt for a new Sacred Soil Marker bound for Arlington National Cemetery. She plans to continue her veteran support work.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Dozens of volunteers placed U.S. flags on nearly 55,000 graves at Santa Fe National Cemetery Saturday in preparation for Monday's Memorial Day celebrations featuring Santa Fe Mayor Michael Garcia as keynote; additional ceremonies will be held in Albuquerque (10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and Rio Rancho (10 a.m.).  Albuquerque Journal

  • Firefighters battled a blaze at the South-Valley recycling plant near Prosperity and Broadway on Saturday, May 23, when a large plume of smoke spread over the area.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM associate professor Dimitri Kapelianis has been chosen for the first NMBA Innovation & Workforce Development Award. He will be honored at the NMBA Awards Gala on June 5 for his role at the UNM Center for Sales and Business Development, which helped place 44 students with local companies.  University of New Mexico

  • Ruidoso Downs opened its 2026 racing season in Albuquerque after flooding affected earlier races—General Manager Rick Baugh said the track’s move brings an estimated $160 to $180 million economic impact, while efforts continue to return racing to Ruidoso next summer.  KOAT
