COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albuquerque’s FemCity ABQ is relaunching its women’s networking group with monthly events for support and discussion. Nicole Sterling-Bruton, who became president shortly after last Christmas, is reshaping the group into a safe space (including coffee meetups) for women sharing both personal and professional stories.  The Paper.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Winrock Town Center will host a free summer concert series starting May 29 through July 24, featuring local musicians, tribute acts and an artisan market. Events take place every Friday night at 2100 Louisiana Blvd NE with concerts beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the market opening at 6 p.m.  The Paper.
  • A traveling exhibition (featuring eight wooden sculptures) from Mexico City and Oaxaca is on display along Central Avenue by Robinson Park through July 17, illuminating downtown with vibrant art that reflects Mexican folk tradition.  KUNM
  • Waiting for Godot returns to the Vortex Theatre for its 50th anniversary season. The play, directed by Lauren Albonico and set in a modern style that honors the theatre's history, runs May 29–June 21 with a pay-what-you-will show on May 31 + cast talkback on June 7.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school seniors in New Mexico increased FAFSA completion by 21.5%, the biggest jump nationwide, though overall applications rank 43rd. Albuquerque Public Schools saw a 20.6% rise, and officials credit dedicated educators + community efforts for boosting federal aid applications before the June 30 deadline.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction crews will use explosives on Paseo del Norte, between Universe and Unser, starting today at noon and running until about 5 p.m. on Friday for storm drainage work — a key step in the $62 million road widening project.  Albuquerque Journal
  • The U.S. Supreme Court accepted a settlement to reduce groundwater pumping along the Rio Grande. New Mexico will retire some irrigated farmland water rights & set up a water-sharing system affecting flows from Albuquerque to Texas, with initial acquisitions starting later this year.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • UNM Health’s orthopedics department now offers a new thumb joint replacement surgery in Albuquerque. Dr. Nathan Morrell performs the first such procedure in New Mexico, giving patients improved motion, stability and strength for arthritis pain.  KOAT
