ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A man from New Mexico was bitten by a shark at Sunset Beach in North Carolina on Wednesday—he was riding a wave when he felt the bite, received help from the local fire department, and was taken to the hospital where he is now recovering.  KOAT
  • A two-story residential fire left 16 people without a home on May 28 when the blaze began around 5:30 p.m. on Pennsylvania Street near Indian School Road—Albuquerque Fire Rescue said it was controlled in 35 minutes, one person was taken to the hospital, and the Red Cross is assisting those displaced while an investigation continues.  KOAT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rock Canyon Cider, popular for its music and craft drinks, announced it will move from its current East Mountains location at 364 NM-333 to a central Tijeras village site after the Tijeras Village Council approved a waiver on May 19 to operate near a school—village leaders expect the move will boost local revenue and community visibility while ensuring safety.  Sandoval Signpost

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 28th, the New Mexico Environment Department sued CRRUA for mismanaging its water system and failing repeated arsenic tests at the Santa Teresa Industrial Park plant — the lawsuit seeks to have an independent manager installed and requires real-time monitoring, free test strips, alternative water sources, monthly public meetings and civil penalties.  Source NM
  • Barcelona Suites hotel closed on Thursday after an Albuquerque inspection found numerous, serious safety violations based on unsanitary and dangerous conditions—city leaders will hold a press conference later today to share more details.  KOAT
  • Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham declared a state of emergency last Thursday to address severe drought and wildfire risk, unlocking emergency funds and coordinating efforts across more than 10 agencies—local jurisdictions now face restrictions including fireworks bans. A state task force met Wednesday and will propose short-term measures to reduce fire risk by July 31.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doulas in New Mexico will be allowed to enroll as Medicaid providers starting on July 1 under the new Doula Credentialing Act signed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham on March 21—this law requires the Department of Health to set up a voluntary process for credentialing and directs hospitals and birth centers to create policies that let doulas accompany patients. These changes aim to expand access to maternal care and support community-based postpartum services.  Source NM
