EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Martian landmark has been named Horton Newsom Point to honor the late UNM planetary scientist Horton Newsom, who died in a car accident on April 19. The 100 meter wide feature on Mount Sharp—part of the Yardang Unit—will be visited by a rover later this decade as Mars exploration continues.  University of New Mexico
  • Today is the first day of summer vacation for APS students and the city is offering free and low-cost programs at 20 community centers, 2 multigenerational centers, and select APS sites. Full-day sessions are full and waitlists are open while partial-day options like tennis, pickleball, and swim lessons will be available soon — parents are advised to check the city's website for updates.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Corrales Village Council approved a $10.6m preliminary budget at its May 27 meeting and moved five farmland preservation projects into the appraisal phase to protect rural lands—despite rising costs and revenue questions. Pueblo of Sandia Gov. Felix Chaves said the Pueblo and Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District reached a deal so work can soon start on replacing the Corrales siphon.  Sandoval Signpost
  • On May 27, Gov. Felix Chaves announced that the Pueblo of Sandia and the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District signed a landmark term sheet, clearing the way for repairs to the Corrales siphon to begin. The agreement (which addresses land access and past trespassing issues) allows construction to start while final paperwork is completed.  Sandoval Signpost
  • State Sen. Cindy Nava held a town hall at Bernalillo High School on May 28 to address concerns about education funding, youth engagement, and healthcare access—she promised to boost community resources with plans such as opening a district office and creating internships for high school students.  Sandoval Signpost
  • Albuquerque city officials closed the Barcelona Suites hotel after inspectors found code violations in nearly all of its 163 rooms—issues included water damage, mold, and pest problems. Mayor Tim Keller said the property had been a hub for crime and community safety teams are helping 30 of the 68 tenants move to temporary housing.  KOAT
  • A federal appeals court ordered a review of a dismissed Native American challenge to the $10 billion SunZia energy transmission project + intervenors urged the Public Regulation Commission to dismiss a $1.25 billion sale request for New Mexico Gas Co. State education experts said revised funding formulas may help offset federal Title III cuts + the Pueblo of Sandia and the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District reached a deal that clears the way for long-delayed Corrales siphon repairs.  KUNM
  • Immigration rights groups in New Mexico decried Homeland Security's list naming 23 counties and the cities of Albuquerque and Santa Fe as sanctuary jurisdictions, saying the label misrepresents local policies that welcome immigrants. Local officials argued the measure undermined public safety by threatening police funding and weakening community trust.  Source NM

  • Special Olympics New Mexico launched its Summer Games in Albuquerque yesterday at the UNM Track and Soccer Complex with an opening ceremony featuring a Parade of Athletes—today the venue hosts track and field events, bocce, and unified flag football while volleyball will conclude the weekend on Sunday.  KOAT
