- ➤ Veteran journalist James Bennett has been promoted to managing editor at the Albuquerque Journal after Jay Newton-Small resigned & his extensive experience is expected to guide the newsroom as it marks a centennial under family ownership. Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ VERS — a new queer bar focused on building community — is set to open in June at 5001 Central Ave. NE between Nob Hill and the International District. Owners Lucas Romero and Luke Rogers plan to feature live entertainment including DJs and drag performers. The Paper.
- ➤ KOAT is partnering with Roadrunner Food Bank to hold a food drive in June at Albertson’s locations in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, Taos, and Santa Fe — the donations will support hunger-relief efforts for children, seniors, and those in need. KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A monsoon-like setup is developing as high pressure to the east and low pressure to the west bring scattered showers, heavy rain pockets, and gusty canyon winds to Albuquerque today and Wednesday. Localized flooding is possible over burn scar areas as moisture increases through the next few days. KOAT
- ➤ Wildfire season in New Mexico has been unusually active with 534 ignitions so far, and officials forecast a peak later in June before conditions improve mid-July with monsoon rains. Dry lightning + low snowpack have driven risks across most of the state while the eastern third stays less threatened. Source NM
- ➤ Placitas is curbing water use amid a severe drought as five of nine springs produce little to no water, and officials will notify residents about conservation measures with potential water shut-offs tonight if the monsoon does not bring relief. Sandoval Signpost
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A temporary restraining order was issued by New Mexico’s chief federal judge on Monday to protect Father Martin, a Nigerian-born priest with the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, from losing his work visa this Friday + the order lets him continue serving the congregation while his visa petition is pending. - ➤ State and local officials cut a ribbon Monday to mark the first phase of a $30 million flood control project in Columbus (designed to protect the border crossing and nearby homes and businesses). The berm and drainage system cover 1,800 acres to support future economic growth. Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ A damaged main water line shut off water service for Estancia in Torrance County just before 3:30 p.m. Monday, and officials have not provided an estimated time for restoration. Albuquerque Journal
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Demolition work began Monday, June 1 on the former Lindy's Diner building in downtown Albuquerque as crews dismantled the Bliss Building — which partially collapsed on April 27 — while officials maintained road closures at Fifth Street and Central Avenue. Safety measures and environmental protocols remain in effect. KOAT
