- ➤ Bernalillo County Animal Care and Resource Center is struggling to care for 255 animals in a facility built for 120 after taking in 113 strays in the past week. The shelter is waiving adoption fees and warns that unless overcrowding improves, humane euthanasia may be necessary—donations and spay and neuter support, including a free clinic, are urged. KOAT
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 49th Annual Albuquerque Pridefest begins at 10 a.m. Saturday June 7 with a parade along Central Ave in Nob Hill—over 130 floats will be led by KOAT 7’s Byron Morton and Sasha Lenninger. The event continues at Civic Plaza with musical performances, 125 vendors and headlining acts Frenchie Davis, Victoria Porkchop Parker and Landon Cider while tickets remain available. KOAT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A reporter visited Kharkiv where children attend underground schools in subway stations to study safely amid ongoing air raids, and officials are expanding these facilities for 10,000 students. Albuquerque Sister Cities is sending 29 laptops—with 19 already secured—to support safe, in-person learning this school year. Source NM
- ➤ New Mexico teachers can apply for up to $6,000 in student loan assistance through the Teacher Loan Repayment Program. Applications are due by Aug. 1 and require U.S. citizenship, one year of residency, a New Mexico teaching license, at least three years of local teaching experience, and priority for high-need roles—such as bilingual education and STEM. - ➤ Many Americans cut back on retirement contributions as Social Security is expected to run low by 2033, leaving Gen X with 70% fearing their benefits may not be available and 67% feeling behind on savings. University of New Mexico finance professor Subramanian Iyer advised using employer-sponsored 401k+IRAs for more secure savings, and experts say politicians will act to protect benefits. KOAT

- ➤ The New Mexico Court of Appeals dismissed a lawsuit that claimed state officials failed to control oil and gas pollution by ruling that the judiciary lacked the power to grant the relief requested—plaintiffs plan to appeal the decision. Source NM
- ➤ The Albuquerque City Council voted 7–2 to ban the sale of fake THC products made from hemp to keep children safe since the items are not well monitored. Mayor Keller must decide by June 12 whether to sign or veto the ban—city departments are now planning how to enforce it. Sandoval Signpost
