EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Placitas Library will host award-winning children's author and illustrator Daniel Vandever for a summer reading program on June 28 at 1 p.m. Vandever—a Diné entrepreneur from Haystack known for his acclaimed picture books—will share his creative journey with local readers.  Sandoval Signpost
  • TRIO program workers say federal proposals to cut funding will hurt college support for over 10,000 New Mexico students from disadvantaged backgrounds—local educators warn that lowering support could also drop graduation rates and weaken the state’s economy.  Source NM
  • A new University of New Mexico study says that schools should hire more psychologists to boost student safety and address unfair discipline practices. UNM Law Professor Maryam Ahranjani explained that heavy reliance on school police has led to inequities for low-income, Native American and disabled students—calling on policymakers to invest in on-campus mental health services.  KUNM

  • Supporters of public lands will gather in Santa Fe on Monday during the Western Governors' Association meeting to oppose legislation that would sell millions of acres in 11 Western states—this protest is organized by the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance.  KUNM
  • A peaceful ICE protest took place Friday afternoon at Civic Plaza where organizers including 19-year-old Angelina Aragon and 17-year-old Destiny Lopez led nearly 5,000 participants in urging local lawmakers to end ICE raids — the Albuquerque Police Department had safety plans in place.  KOAT
  • Seven candidates, including incumbent Tim Keller + six challengers, have secured spots in the Albuquerque mayor race as he seeks a third term. The contest will decide the city's leadership in the upcoming election.  Albuquerque Journal

  • Voting has opened for naming the New Mexico Pro Hockey Club, an expansion ECHL team that will soon play at the Rio Rancho arena. Fans can vote for one of three finalists—Cutthroats, Goatheads, or Tarantula Hawks—and voting closes July 3 at 5 p.m.  KOAT
