CRIME NEWS

  • New Mexico prosecutors warned lawmakers that a growing backlog of untested rape kits leaves survivors without clear answers as states adopt tracking systems amid uncertain federal support—federal efforts totaling nearly $400 million have not yet cleared the delays.  Source NM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM astronomers and international researchers confirmed a new gas giant exoplanet, TOI-4465 b, with help from 24 citizen scientists across 10 countries—its size and density make it a prime target for future atmospheric studies using JWST.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New Mexico environment and the Department of Justice announced a lawsuit on Monday against the US Air Force over PFAS contamination at Cannon Air Force Base near Clovis. The suit will require the military to stop using PFAS firefighting foam except in emergencies—install water treatment and drinking water lines, hold public meetings, add stormwater controls, and compensate affected property owners.  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • With temperatures reaching triple digits, city officials are urging residents to use cooling centers and take precautions to stay safe in extreme heat. City measures include opening splash pads and pools, expanding the Gateway Network shelter system, and requiring rental units to have working cooling systems while advising everyone to drink water and call 911 in emergencies.  The Paper.
  • New Mexico has set up a Disaster Resource Center at the Daniel Fernandez Recreation Center in Los Lunas that will open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and state disaster case managers are available at the Grant County Business—Conference Center in Silver City to help residents affected by recent fires and floods.  Sandoval Signpost
  • Sen. Martin Heinrich said on Wednesday that GOP-backed proposals to sell public lands threaten tribal sovereignty, outdoor recreation and wildlife habitats — once sold, the lands will be limited to development and cannot return to conservation or recreation.  Source NM
  • A judge will soon decide if oral arguments can move forward in a suit that asks Border Patrol to stop seizing legal cannabis from state-licensed operators and return lost goods and money. Cannabis industry leaders say the case could set a national rule—one that might aid many legal businesses in avoiding future seizures.  The Paper.

HEALTH NEWS

  • Despite billions in state funding to improve health care, New Mexicans’ physical and mental health outcomes have not improved as planned—rates of substance use disorders and major depressive episodes have risen while fewer people visit doctors but more see mental health practitioners. Recent data shows more children are born with low birth weights and withdrawal symptoms from drug exposure during pregnancy—raising concerns about the effectiveness of current interventions.  Source NM
  • Investigative reporter Mariah Blake — author of They Poisoned the World — explained that forever chemicals developed during the Manhattan Project and used in military firefighting foam have contaminated water and wildlife near Holloman Air Force Base, placing local residents at risk. University of New Mexico researchers found PFAS levels in local wildlife far above EPA standards, and state health officials advise anyone who consumed birds from the area between 2010 and 2024 to seek medical guidance.  Source NM
