Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 28th of June.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cottonwood Mall reopened after a heat-related shutdown, but vendors still face extreme temperatures that spoil food and damage equipment—Slice of Heaven Pizza had to buy its own cooling units to protect inventory. Mall management said repairs may take three to six months, and some vendors are exploring legal options for financial losses.  KOAT

CRIME NEWS

  • A settlement was reached in a lawsuit by Rust crew members who accuse Alec Baldwin and film producers of not following safety rules after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died on a film set near Santa Fe in October 2021.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Albuquerque Police arrested Christian Elycio—21—for the deadly shooting at Blake's Lotaburger on Rio Grande Boulevard near I-40, where Edward Nicholas—46—was fatally shot 10 times after a dispute, and Elycio faces an open count of murder while being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center.  KOAT
  • New Mexico State Police is asking the public to help recover wildfire equipment worth $180,000 that was stolen from the state Forestry Division earlier this month.  Albuquerque Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins announced plans to repeal roadless protections covering 58 million acres to boost logging and wildfire management, but a study by The Wilderness Society found that areas without roads had far fewer wildfire starts—1.9 fires per 1,000 hectares compared to 7.4 near roads, with the Southwest showing even higher rates near roadways. The study, using three decades of wildfire data and analyses from the Gila National Forest, challenges the agency’s approach to wildfire prevention.  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State lawmakers emphasized that New Mexico’s new behavioral health overhaul must not lead to criminal involvement—local stakeholders will set care priorities for review by a Behavioral Health Reform Executive Committee. Regions will submit final plans by July 2026 and the Committee will meet next on Aug. 5 to outline guidelines.  Source NM
  • Legislative analysts said New Mexico’s election costs nearly tripled in recent years — rising poll worker pay, more polling sites, and expensive equipment have raised concerns and led to a recommendation to cut 285 sites to save $3.2 million. Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver told lawmakers she did not create the overspending and argued the report was rushed and overlooked improvements in election security and access.  Source NM
