ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Rescue crews from Albuquerque Fire Rescue & Bernalillo County are still searching for a man swept away from an arroyo near Carlisle and Menaul boulevards after a call at 1:45 a.m. on Thursday, and units including an airboat have been deployed while officials advise the public to avoid arroyos during monsoon season. - ➤ The documentary 'Rooted Waters' shows a youth fishing camp where Indigenous fishing techniques—steeped in spiritual beliefs and community life—teach respect for nature, and Vidal Gonzales started The Uncivilized Outdoorsman to share these practices. Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ James Holloway selected longtime professor Mark Emmons as the new dean of University Libraries and Learning Sciences at UNM, with his term set to begin on Aug. 24 and run through Jan. 31. Emmons, who has served at UNM since 1998, said he looks forward to advancing the college’s strategic plan while following Leo Lo’s move to the University of Virginia — his experience prepares him well for the role. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A study found that from 2019 to 2024 local jails held 15.3% fewer detainees—while the Metropolitan Detention Center near Albuquerque held 30.3% more—and officials linked the rise to increased bookings and longer detentions under changing policies. Source NM
- ➤ The New Mexico State Fair Tax District Board met on Thursday at Expo New Mexico to outline plans for a $500 million investment in the struggling International District and to consider relocating the state fair—members included Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Mayor Tim Keller, and Senate President Pro Tempore Mimi Stewart. The board hired design firm Stantec to draft a master plan and will soon begin buying out local businesses using eminent domain as part of the redevelopment effort. Source NM
- ➤ New Mexico’s Turquoise Alert system for missing Native people went into effect Tuesday but police have not yet agreed on how to verify tribal enrollment—Farmington police are still developing their protocol while other agencies have not provided details.
