ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash on Unser Boulevard between Gibson Boulevard and Blake Road closed the road in both directions around 6 a.m. on Monday—police investigated the scene and advised drivers to use 98th Street or Coors Boulevard as a detour.  KOAT

CRIME NEWS

  • Police are investigating a fatal shooting in southeast Albuquerque that happened Monday morning—officers responded to 6300 Central Avenue after a male reported being shot, and the victim died at the hospital.  KOAT
  • An Albuquerque woman aged 39 was arrested on July 3 and charged with child abuse resulting in death after a 10-month-old foster baby suffered a seizure in mid-June and was taken to hospital, police said she gave conflicting details about the baby's care and left the child with her husband despite claiming he was at work—four other foster children and one biological child were then placed in state custody.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The fifth annual KOAT 7 Book Drive is accepting new and gently used children’s books until July 28 to help local schools, libraries, and communities. Donations can be dropped off at Barnes & Noble Coronado Center and Cottonwood Corners locations — or at local Nusenda Credit Union branches and public libraries, and there is an option to donate online.  KOAT
  • The University of New Mexico announced Anne Kinsinger as the new director of the ARID Institute and she will begin on Sept. 15—bringing over 30 years of experience from USGS and other agencies to guide research on dryland resilience.  University of New Mexico
  • The Office of Compliance, Ethics & Equal Opportunity has named Beck Rivera as the new Title IX coordinator; he began his role on July 1 and will continue as deputy chief compliance officer while working to strengthen Title IX access and campus connections.  University of New Mexico

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the Turquoise Alert law in April to help find missing Indigenous people, and while the system went into effect last Tuesday—officials remain unsure how each police department will verify tribal enrollment, which may delay alerts.  Source NM
