- ➤ Since January, increasing ICE detentions have left many immigrants in New Mexico fearful of tasks like working or taking their children to school, and several organizations are offering 'red cards' with rights information—aiming to ease those concerns. - ➤ This weekend the New Mexico Tattoo Fiesta kicks off at Isleta Resort and Casino, with tattoo artist Brian Everett organizing the three‑day event to honor Jack Rudy and John 'Bael' Sisneros by featuring top artists like Freddy Negrate, Oliver Peck and Tommy Montoya. - ➤ The Placitas Community Library is marking the 80th anniversary of the Trinity atomic explosion, which happened on July 16th 1945—133 miles south of Placitas. The library will host a month-long display of photos, books and documents and will screen the PBS documentary The Bomb on July 13 at 2 p.m.—a session that will include a discussion on the history and impact of nuclear weapons. - ➤ The University of New Mexico announced that Robert “Bob” Ledoux has been appointed as director of the Quantum New Mexico Institute and he will begin his role on Aug. 1 — he brings over 30 years of experience in nuclear physics, energy research, and technological innovation to advance quantum science in the state. - ➤ The University of New Mexico-led Energized Watershed coalition was named one of 29 semifinalists in the NSF Engines competition and will soon undergo virtual assessments before finalists are selected this fall—its 50-member team works to develop clean water and energy solutions across regional watersheds. Another New Mexico team, Elevate Quantum, was also named a semifinalist for its work on developing quantum technologies. University of New Mexico
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mescalero tribe Vice President Duane Duffy told state lawmakers at the tribe’s Inn of the Mountain Gods that online sports betting apps like Kalshi allow illegal wagers that undermine tribal gaming rights and revenue. He said the tribe will ask the Attorney General and Legislature for help ahead of the January legislative session. Source NM
- ➤ Since July 1, property owners with vacant buildings downtown must register and maintain them to reduce blight and boost economic activity. Code enforcement officials began notifying owners on May 1 and will survey properties annually, and owners must secure buildings and pay fees based on square footage and vacancy duration (base fees range from $1,000 to $5,000) as required by the new ordinance. - ➤ New Mexico veterans will attend a benefit workshop on July 16 from 3-5 p.m. at 4132 Jackie Rd. SE in Rio Rancho—legislators and representatives from the Department of Veterans Services will guide them in applying for benefits, including a free park and camping pass, and explain recent changes to health care and property tax exemptions.
