CRIME NEWS

  • An Albuquerque mother and her son used Instagram and a 3D printer to sell illegal machine gun conversion devices and were sentenced today in federal court—Joe Jasso received 33 months in prison while his mother got 30 months, with both facing two years of supervised release.  KOAT
  • Police investigated a fatal stabbing near a city bus on Coors and Iliff in northwest Albuquerque—officers detained a bus driver after a man was stabbed and later died at the hospital, and they closed southbound lanes on Coors.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham on Wednesday outlined a directive that prevents infants born with drug exposures from being discharged to their parents’ homes—aimed at protecting vulnerable newborns until proper care can be arranged.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed an emergency declaration after catastrophic flooding in Ruidoso killed three people and caused severe damage—she said the request will bring federal teams and repair resources to help the recovery efforts.  KOAT
  • Three years after the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire, nearly 30 lawsuits have been filed against FEMA over delays in promised aid for victims who lost almost one thousand structures + homes. The complaints by 167 plaintiffs including school districts and trusts claim FEMA failed to provide full compensation, and the suits may force a review of its procedures.  KOAT

HEALTH NEWS

  • City officials are urging residents to beat the extreme heat today by offering relief options—air-conditioned shelters, water and sunscreen kits at libraries, and access to pools and spray pads. Community groups such as God’s Warehouse and Health Care for the Homeless are providing meals and cold drinks to help lower the risk of heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses.  KOAT
  • Researchers analyzed over 1,500 cases of Valley Fever over 18 years and found that the fungus is endemic in New Mexico, especially in dry, dusty areas prone to dust storms. The study revealed that soil from rodent burrows in counties like Catron, Doña Ana, Sierra and Socorro had high levels of the pathogen, urging residents to seek early treatment if symptoms develop.  KOAT
