  • Family and friends of Venezuelan delivery driver Deivi Jose Molina-Pena said he suffered a head injury after ICE agents violently arrested him inside a Walmart in Albuquerque on July 7—witnessed video captured his arrest amid rising local tensions among delivery drivers.  Source NM

  • UNM Division of Student Affairs announced finalists Janelle Torres-Groover and Laura Franklin for the Accessibility Resource Center director role—a position focused on ensuring students with disabilities receive proper accommodations, with forums scheduled to present each finalist's vision and plans including ASL interpreters and captioning.  University of New Mexico
  • Xiaobing Zhu was named the first winner of the Mansoor Sheik-Bahae Best Dissertation Award at UNM this summer — an honor that pays tribute to the late professor — for her work on a new method to measure light phase changes. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After catastrophic flooding earlier this week left three people dead and hundreds displaced, Ruidoso braces for more heavy rain as forecasters predict up to three inches per hour this weekend + saturated ground and burn scars heighten flood risk. Mayor Lynn Crawford said equipment and personnel are staging today along the Rio Ruidoso and will work to clear debris once water levels recede while officials advise residents to follow boil-water guidelines until safety is confirmed.  Source NM

  • New Mexico in Focus examined new state laws that reform CYFD practices and legalize medical mushroom treatment, which sets a 2027 deadline for state approval — reporters highlighted issues in child placement and potential benefits for patients with severe depression and PTSD. The program also discussed higher education initiatives such as loan forgiveness and scholarship programs, having aired Friday, July 11 and scheduled to re-air Sunday, July 13.  University of New Mexico
  • Sandoval County’s new Public Safety Emergency Communications Center began taking calls July 1 and now handles emergencies across the county—ensuring residents get timely help during busy periods like the Fourth of July holiday. County officials said the $3.9 million project, staffed with nearly 24 full-time dispatchers, is the first large-scale center in more than 20 years and works jointly with Rio Rancho’s center when needed.  Sandoval Signpost
  • County officials said that under a 2007 law, local jails spent $383 million between June 2023 and July 2024 but received only $4.6 million in reimbursements—leaving a shortfall of over $45 million that has prompted discussions of legislative changes or litigation.   • Joey Sanchez of the Native Land Institute said a new four-day training program will soon teach aspiring Native leaders skills like organizing, messaging and fundraising. The program aims to boost political representation (Native Americans hold only 40 of 2201 elected offices) by building on traditional values (Indigenous peoples make up 12.7 percent of New Mexico’s population).  KUNM
