Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of July.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local artists will open the Raining Cats and Dogs exhibit at Placitas Community Library this weekend, showcasing over a dozen artworks in jewelry, sculpture, fiber art, photography, paintings and collage that reimagine the familiar saying—turning an old phrase into a creative display. The exhibit will run from July 19 through Aug. 14 and will have an artists’ reception on Aug. 8 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.  Sandoval Signpost

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Larry Tillotson, deputy director at the Public Schools Facilities Authority, told lawmakers Monday that more than $3.1 billion in state funds has raised average maintenance scores from 57% to over 76% across 91 school districts. Nine districts remain marginal or poor while high scorers like Hobbs, Farmington, Clovis, and Central Consolidated are saving on funding costs — a sign that schools are now safer for students and staff.  Source NM
  • UNM Bookstores has launched a customer satisfaction survey to gather feedback from students, faculty, staff and visitors on its services and products. The survey will help shape improvements for a redesigned e-commerce platform and a Course Materials Access pilot program coming this fall (with a chance to win one of five $100 or 10 $50 gift cards).  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A monsoon system is set to bring scattered thunderstorms and heavy rain throughout New Mexico every day this week—flood watches are in effect in places like Ruidoso while temperatures stay near mid-July averages. Michael Padilla is hosting his 13th annual job fair tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rio Grande High School at 2300 Arenal Road SW, where over 100 employers will offer on-the-spot interviews and immediate hiring opportunities while job seekers are advised to dress professionally and bring extra copies of their resume.  KOAT
  • A state regulator laid out the complex permitting steps for five pending uranium mine projects at a meeting in Grants—each project must obtain federal water discharge permits and complete tribal consultations before moving forward. Lawmakers voiced concerns that fast-track reviews may not protect environmental and worker safety, noting that permits for some projects will only be completed by November 2027 or May 2028.  Source NM
  • Today, New Mexico’s Aging and Long-Term Services Department reactivated its Long-Term Care Division to coordinate support for older residents, people with disabilities and caregivers with nearly $7 million in funds—$500,000 of which is dedicated to the division. The division will streamline community-based programs such as New MexiCare and the Veteran-Directed Care Program—improving training and services for caregivers in rural and tribal areas.  Source NM

Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
