CRIME NEWS

  • Diego Sanchez, an Albuquerque cage-fighting legend, was booked into the Bernalillo County Detention Center early Friday—he was arrested the previous evening on a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM’s Institutional Support Services teams hosted their 6th annual Car Show and Safety Vendor Fair on campus, where over 100 employee car enthusiasts displayed vehicles from classic hot rods to modern Dodge Vipers and motorcycles—safety vendors provided information and awarded prizes while a Taste of New Mexico contest recognized dips and desserts.  University of New Mexico
  • Seniors in Bernalillo will receive free technology training through a partnership between Albuquerque startup Teeniors and the Martha Liebert Library. The program features a workshop on Senior Scams scheduled for August 6 at 10 a.m. — one-on-one tutoring will follow at 11 a.m.  Sandoval Signpost

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawyers for FEMA have not yet decided if they will appeal a December ruling that ordered compensation for noneconomic damages to victims of the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire—this decision leaves plaintiffs like Marianna Lands, whose farm burned and who suffered health setbacks, in limbo until the court releases its written decision. FEMA will determine its next steps once the court rules on the motion to correct.  Source NM
  • The NM Supreme Court clarified that warrantless searches done during New Mexico's brief decriminalization period for small amounts of marijuana before legalization in 2021 did not always break rules — the ruling may affect how past cases are handled in court.  Albuquerque Journal
  • A rescissions bill passed by Congress is set to cancel $1.1 billion in federal funds that support public broadcasting—including 10 local stations in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and smaller communities—which means New Mexico PBS and others will soon face major cutbacks in programs and emergency alerts. Local media leaders are preparing for the changes and seeking more private donations as debates over alleged political bias in public media heat up.  KOAT
  • Joannie Suina was named Assistant Secretary for Native American Early Childhood Education and Care on July 18th, and she brings over 20 years of experience as a native language teacher and educator — she will work to strengthen early education partnerships through government-to-government consultation across 23 nations, tribes, and pueblos in New Mexico.  KUNM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Planned Parenthood in New Mexico is trying to treat as many Medicaid patients as possible as a temporary court order that allowed the services ends soon—so the provider urges patients to schedule appointments before the order expires.  Albuquerque Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ivana and Carmen Corley from Albuquerque won their first Women’s Tennis Association Doubles Championship in Newport, Rhode Island on July 13 by overcoming a 2-5 deficit in the first set to win in straight sets—marking a big win for the sisters. Now in Portugal, they are competing at the Eupago Porto Open and will try for another doubles title today at 8 a.m. Mountain time.  KOAT
