CRIME NEWS

  • Teenager Andres Herrera pleaded no contest to first-degree murder charges in fatal shootings in Albuquerque — one incident in early October 2023 outside a brewery took the life of Phillip Apodaca, while a separate shooting two days after Christmas resulted in the death of 19-year-old Damion Alday.  KOAT
  • State and local crime labs are facing steep federal funding cuts that may delay essential forensic tests, including rape kits in New Mexico—experts warn this could slow down criminal investigations and court cases.  Source NM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Joannie Suina has been named assistant secretary for Native American Early Childhood Education & Care to strengthen state-tribal partnerships and promote culturally responsive education. She brings two decades of teaching experience from Cochiti Pueblo and the Institute of American Indian Arts to lead early interventions that honor Native traditions.  Source NM
  • UNM introduced a new course model—Resilience Solutions Incubator—that provided 10 freshmen and sophomores with hands-on research experience by partnering with the Pueblo of Laguna on bioremediation and science communication, and administrators are now working to count the course toward biology degree requirements.  University of New Mexico

  • Albuquerque Police Department has launched a non-emergency hotline — 242-COPS — for residents to ask about ICE activity after a viral Walmart detainment near Coors and I-40 sparked concern; officers say the system is meant to help distinguish real operations from impersonators and keep public trust strong.  KUNM
  • Mayor Tim Keller and the city council have announced an executive order affirming Albuquerque’s commitment to immigrant and refugee rights—strengthening and clarifying existing city policy. The order is set to guide city services as officials work to support these communities.  KOAT
  • New Mexico’s Quantum Moonshot project, led by Elevate Quantum, was named one of 29 semifinalists in the NSF Regional Innovation Engines Program—an initiative set to invest up to $160 million over 10 years in regional innovation. NSF will conduct virtual assessments ahead of in-person reviews this fall, aiming to advance quantum solutions that could boost our local economy.  University of New Mexico
