CRIME NEWS

  • Officials at Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center reported that Thomas Acee, 21, was found unresponsive at approximately 4:27 a.m. on July 23 and declared dead at 4:48 a.m. after staff and UNM hospital medical teams attempted life-saving measures — the Sheriff's Office was notified and the case is under investigation by the MDC office of Professional Standards with the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator set to determine the cause.  KOAT
  • APD arrested 38-year-old Andrew Romero in Valencia County after he stole a bait car near Presbyterian Hospital at 6 a.m. on Wednesday and attempted to flee when surveillance showed him entering a Los Lunas residence and throwing a stolen firearm from the car—he was later booked into Albuquerque's Metropolitan Detention Center.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thousands gathered in Albuquerque on July 23 to honor metal icon Ozzy Osbourne after his death from Parkinson’s disease. Revel Entertainment hosted a free candlelight vigil — uniting local fans who remembered his ties to the city.  KOAT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report showed New Mexico’s poverty rate was 18.1% — 5.7 percent above the national rate — and more than 4,631 people were unhoused last year, a 20% increase from 2023. Officials said rising rent, which increased 23% since 2019, put more low-income renters at risk and may prompt lawmakers to consider affordable housing measures.  KUNM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM professor Kristina Jacobsen has been awarded a CORE Fellowship and will leave this August for a two-year residency at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies to research the Camino de Santiago. She will study cultural connections along the pilgrimage route with her projects Three Miles an Hour and Together at the Table while working with international scholars.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An endangered Mexican gray wolf left its experimental population area last week to roam near Mount Taylor north of I-40 — it is the fifth wolf to do so since 2017.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • UNM and the First Judicial District Attorney's Office were awarded a three-year Institutional Challenge Grant from the William T. Grant Foundation to expand their deflection and diversion program aimed at reducing racial and ethnic inequalities in juvenile justice across Santa Fe, Los Alamos and Rio Arriba Counties. The grant, worth $650,000 with a possible extra $350,000, will help the team (started in 2020) refine community alternatives to incarceration for youth and young adults.  University of New Mexico

HEALTH NEWS

  • A report from legislative analysts showed that public health offices treated only 321 of the estimated 9,100 New Mexicans with opioid use disorder in fiscal 2024, with most offices serving fewer than 10 patients. Health officials plan to boost the program by centralizing marketing—setting performance targets, reporting data and adding mobile clinics—to help more people receive treatment.  Source NM
  • The New Mexico Department of Health confirmed a measles case in Santa Fe County in an unvaccinated child under 10 who got the virus during international travel — the case brings New Mexico’s total to 96. Health officials said anyone who visited Cliff’s Amusement Park in Albuquerque on July 17 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. should check their vaccination status and watch for symptoms over the next 21 days.  KOAT

Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
