EDUCATION NEWS

  • Research Assistant Professor Svende Braun of UNM was chosen as co-convener of the ATLAS Experiment’s B-Physics Weak Decays Working Group and will start her new role in October. She joined UNM in January and now leads teams studying the b-quark—an important step toward understanding why matter dominates the universe.  University of New Mexico

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Professor Christopher Witt from UNM said Albuquerque is ideal for roadrunners because the dry heat and bird feeder economy gives the birds energy from desert lizards+ while urban structures let them thrive. Former UNM student Renata Gonzales noted that these dinosaur-like birds remind locals of New Mexico's ancient desert landscape.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a Wednesday meeting of the Legislative Capital Outlay Subcommittee, analysts reported that an estimated $5.9 billion in funds went unspent for roads, water systems and public schools because local requests exceed available money and the eligibility rules are weak—issues that have delayed projects and raised lawmakers’ concerns. Lawmakers discussed changes to limit reauthorizations and tighten guidelines, and proposals will be introduced in the 2026 session to better match funds with community needs.  Source NM
  • Sandoval County officials approved an updated list of polling places on July 23, dropping seven sites because some are unavailable due to renovations, lease changes, or other issues. County staff is working with property owners to secure new sites—such as the Cochiti Pueblo Community Center—before the Aug. 24 notice is sent to registered voters.  Sandoval Signpost

Maximize Space and Stay Organized with Compression Packing Cubes

Don’t overlook compression packing cubes for your next trip — they’re a simple but transformative travel essential. Designed to compress clothing and maximize space, these cubes help you fit twice as much into your suitcase without the bulk.

Beyond just saving space, compression packing cubes keep your luggage neat and organized. Group your outfits by day or category, separate clean and dirty clothes, or designate cubes for different family members when traveling together. No more rummaging through your suitcase — everything stays in its place, easily accessible when you need it.

Lightweight and durable, these cubes are ideal for carry-ons and checked bags alike. They also help prevent overpacking by limiting how much you can fit in each cube. Once you try them, you’ll wonder how you ever traveled without them.
