  • Yesterday, the KUNM news team received several national & regional awards for work done in 2024 at a conference in Kansas City. Reporters Jeanette DeDios, Kaveh Mowahed & News Director Megan Kamerick were honored for coverage that included stories on Native American voters, public safety and wildfires.  KUNM

CRIME NEWS

  • Bernalillo police reported that a suspect remains at large after Monday night’s shooting at Rotary Park left one man dead and another injured, and they released details of a 6-foot-tall suspect in a purple shirt, blue jeans and a black ski mask — urging anyone with information to contact Detective A. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The UNM School of Law Clinic in Albuquerque hired licensed social worker Lucía Fraire in May to expand support for students and clients by addressing issues like housing, food security and mental health access — a move funded through a multi-year partnership with Bernalillo County. The clinic will also train students and staff on trauma-informed methods — a step that strengthens its multidisciplinary approach to legal education.  University of New Mexico
  • New Mexico’s Public Education Department will hold 12 community meetings in August to gather public input for a court-ordered plan to improve school equity for at-risk students. The department is partnering with the LANL Foundation to complete a draft by Oct. 1st (final plan due by Nov. 3rd) and will meet in cities including Albuquerque (Aug. 20th).  Source NM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New Mexico environmental leaders are opposing the EPA plan to scrap the rule that controls greenhouse gas emissions—warning it could harm local health and clean energy jobs. State officials and conservation groups plan to work with lawmakers as the proposal enters a public comment period lasting 45 days and is set to be finalized within the next year.  Source NM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Rep. Gabe Vasquez visited the Otero County Processing Center where ICE holds most detainees and said he was not allowed to speak with them—he also noted that ICE officials did not clearly answer questions about facility conditions. He said broken phones and non-working toilets raise concerns about detainee treatment as lawmakers push for more oversight.  Source NM
