CRIME NEWS

  • Police dispatchers reported that on July 25 the mother and father of the alleged UNM shooter spoke with 911 after the mother said her son was hallucinating—further details were not immediately available.  Albuquerque Journal
  • An Albuquerque man, Peter Sandoval, was federally sentenced to 199 days for covering up a 2020 kidnapping and murder on the Navajo Nation — he removed blood from the truck used to move Thomas Brown after Antonio Chaco assaulted him outside a trailer home, and Chaco later received a 17-year sentence.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On August 1, UNM leaders briefed community members and media about safety projects and ongoing security efforts on campus facilities. They detailed planned investments and measures—aimed at strengthening both physical safety and overall campus security for students and staff.  University of New Mexico
  • College students in New Mexico may face increased food insecurity as SNAP benefits will be cut almost 20% over the next eight years, reducing food support for low-income families and students raising children. A statewide survey found 6,000 students already worry about food — UNM professor Sarita Cargas warned that older, independent students working long hours may be hit hardest.  KUNM
  • Albuquerque Public Schools is offering free meals to students to help families save money and keep kids healthy by using federal and state funds. Sandra Kemp, the school nutrition director, said the meals meet national guidelines—providing milk, fruits, vegetables, and a variety of fresh produce.  KOAT

  • A warmer trend will bring record heat across the state, with Albuquerque set to see near triple-digit temperatures and heat advisories starting tomorrow. Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activities during the peak heat—helping reduce the risk of heat-related problems through the week.  KOAT

  • After nearly two years of litigation, a federal judge upheld that FEMA must pay fire victims for the emotional toll of the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire, and the agency is reviewing the ruling to decide if it will appeal within 60 days—an appeal that could delay compensation by around two years.  KUNM
