  • Road work will start near La Luz Trailhead—expected to last about a month—and hikers on the La Luz Trail in the Sandia Mountains will need to choose another route during construction.  Albuquerque Journal

  • A family is calling for safer streets after their 19-year-old daughter Kayla Vanlandingham was hit and killed while biking on Hahn Arroyo trail near Carlisle Boulevard on July 22; police said the driver stopped immediately as Esperance Bicycle Center plans to install a ghost bike in her honor.  KOAT

  • Albuquerque police are investigating a suspicious death after finding a body at 9109 Copper Ave NE and have not released the victim's identity.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico will host First-Year Family Day on Sunday, Aug. 17 to welcome new students with a convocation beginning at 4 p.m. at Popejoy Hall. Campus tours will depart at 5 p.m. and an outdoor movie will be shown at 8 p.m.  University of New Mexico
