- ➤ The City of Albuquerque is celebrating Route 66's centennial with new murals being installed near Central Ave and University Blvd—local artists Travis Black and Noé Barnett work on a community mural while Jesse Littlebird and Thomas Christopher Haag have unveiled a buffalo artwork at the El Rey Theater. The projects feature regional themes and native symbolism and form part of about 23 artworks displayed along the route. The Paper.

- ➤ Bernalillo police investigated a deadly shooting at Rotary Park on July 28 at 8:35 p.m. that left one man dead and another injured—detectives released a description of the suspect, a 6-foot tall man wearing a purple shirt and blue jeans, and continue to follow leads as he remains at large. - ➤ More than 260 inmates have graduated high school in New Mexico prisons. Richard Lewis—convicted for forging treasury bonds—earned almost half his graduation credits during his four-year sentence and will be released in two weeks. Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ The UNM Office of Institutional Analytics and Office of Assessment/Academic Program Review will host the Art & Science of Data: From Numbers to Narratives— a hybrid event held online on Oct. 16 and in person on Oct. 17 that invites faculty, staff and students to submit presentation proposals by Sept. 1, with notifications sent by Sept. 15 and further details on registration and schedule coming in mid-September. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ UNM’s ARID Institute received a four-year, $7 million grant from NSF to build a statewide network that unites researchers, land managers and communities to improve forest and watershed management. The FOR-NM project will combine remote sensing, field data and machine learning — creating tools to guide water conservation and prepare for economic and workforce growth. University of New Mexico
- ➤ The Rio Grande in Albuquerque has been dry for about a month along a 10-mile stretch due to low snowpack and water diversion that has slowed irrigation for local farmers. Anne Marken of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District said expected rains may quickly restore some flow — farmers are urged to stay ready for sudden rain events. KUNM

- ➤ In July, the EPA approved DOE’s request to add two new underground storage panels at WIPP after a panel was contaminated in 2014—state officials say DOE must now clarify plans to prioritize legacy waste from the Cold War. This move comes as officials work together to meet both federal and state safety requirements for nuclear waste storage. KUNM
- ➤ The Justice Department extended acting U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison’s term until next year — after federal judges declined to approve his appointment and no replacement was named. New Mexico senators criticized the move as sidestepping Senate review while Ellison vowed to continue leading his 200-person office to fight crime. Source NM
- ➤ Sandoval County commissioners approved a wildfire protection plan that uses fuel management—such as chainsaw thinning and public education—to reduce risks along roads and in communities.
