COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On August 12, volunteers with the Unconditional Love Foundation provided haircuts, showers, meals and essential services to people experiencing homelessness on Vermont Street in Albuquerque’s International District — a grassroots effort aimed at offering support.   • APD is investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday evening near 5th and Central near Kimo Theatre in NW Albuquerque—two people received gunshot wounds and were taken to the hospital in stable condition.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Organizers announced Saturday that Albuquerque’s Gathering of Nations powwow will hold its final event in 2026 after 43 years of drawing tens of thousands for Indigenous dance, music and art. The decision comes amid long-standing criticism of the event's commercial aspects and new fairgrounds redevelopment plans—raising uncertainty over future cultural gatherings.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Investigators and local cultural experts are partnering to trace nearly 150 sacred items stolen from Santa Ana Pueblo in burglaries that began in August 1984—using auction records, ledgers, and family recollections to recover the missing artifacts.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Center for Regional Studies has welcomed a new director, Damián Vergara Wilson, who earned his Ph.D. from The University of New Mexico and led the Spanish as a Heritage Language program since 2009. He plans to launch a new project that will involve undergraduates and build tools to save New Mexican Spanish and support local Native curriculum.  University of New Mexico

  • On August 12, Laurel Ladwig of the ABQ Backyard Refuge Program led a talk at Blackbird Coffee House in Old Town while the Museum of Natural History and Sciences is closed for renovation. She explained how locals can use native plants and simple techniques—such as leaving dead branches—to create wildlife-friendly yards and noted that certified spaces receive a free rain barrel from the water conservation program.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

  • An editorial urges Albuquerque officials to adopt ranked‐choice voting for the upcoming November municipal elections to give voters more choices and reduce negative campaigning.   • On Aug. 14 the UNM women’s soccer team won 8-0 against the Texas Southern University Lady Tigers by scoring three goals early and setting their highest goal total since 2002—forward Nicole Anderson scored a hat trick and defender Fiona Jenkins set a record with three assists.   • The University of New Mexico Lobo football team held a public scrimmage on Aug.15 in Albuquerque where coach Jason Eck tested a new roster—players like running back Scottre Humphrey and three quarterbacks took center stage.
