- ➤ On Sunday, a woman was shot in the chest outside a Maverik gas station in Southeast Albuquerque — the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office said her ex-boyfriend later committed suicide — and she was taken to a local hospital. Albuquerque Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Laura Franklin has been named director of UNM’s Accessibility Resource Center after a national search—she will begin her role Monday, Sept. 8 and use over 30 years of student support experience to improve campus access. University of New Mexico
- ➤ Cora Mandell, a senior at Cibola High School — a member of a local Girl Scout troop — won the Girl Scout Gold Award for building a sensory sanctuary to help students who struggle with busy school days; she worked hard to turn an old room into a useful space and said many students now get the help they need while she plans to become a national park ranger after graduation. - ➤ On Monday, state officials warned lawmakers that federal cuts to food programs will likely deepen hunger among children and seniors. They said reduced funding for school lunches, outreach for produce safety and sustainable farming plus stricter work rules could create uncertainty for low-income residents. Source NM
- ➤ The Albuquerque mayoral race begins to take shape as seven candidates—including Mayor Tim Keller, Councilor Louie Sanchez, former Sheriff Darren White, entrepreneur Daniel Chavez, former U.S. Attorney Alex Uballez, Navy veteran Mayling Armijo and retired Fire Chief Eddie Varela—compete in a contest that may require a runoff if no one secures over 50% on Nov. 4. Tim Keller leads with nearly $750,000 in public campaign funds, giving him an early advantage as candidates work to raise their profiles before Election Day. KOAT

- ➤ A University of New Mexico researcher is part of the RE-KINDLE trial using a synthetic psychedelic—called the pro drug—to help patients cope with terminal illnesses and other life-altering events. - ➤ Health providers in New Mexico say insurance red tape harms patient care as doctors and nurses now spend up to four hours each week on billing tasks. Two researchers from the University of New Mexico Center for Social Policy will present the study's findings today in Gallup—calling for structural reforms—at a legislative meeting. Source NM
- ➤ Texas health officials announced that the measles outbreak in West Texas ended on Monday after 42 days with no new cases—since January, Texas confirmed 762 cases with nearly 100 hospitalizations and two child deaths. New Mexico recorded 100 cases and one death from the outbreak—health care providers are urged to test patients with symptoms as the risk remains. KOAT
