CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The autopsy for the teen killed at the University of New Mexico confirmed he was shot once in the head — campus gunfire was first reported around midnight on July 25 when a dorm resident called 911. Albuquerque Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Canadian pianist Sheng Cai will open the Placitas Artists Series season with a solo recital on Sept. 14 at Las Placitas Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m.—his program spans three centuries with works by Bach, Beethoven, Scriabin and Canadian composers François Morel and André Mathieu. A pre-concert talk will begin at 2 p.m.—a reception will follow and an art exhibition runs through Oct. 30 with free public admission. Sandoval Signpost
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of New Mexico researcher Katie Witkiewitz, director of CASAA, was honored with the Marlatt Mentorship Award from the Research Society on Alcohol — the largest group of alcohol researchers, which recognized her exceptional mentoring over 13 years. She has guided 25 researchers and supports a renewed NIH Training Grant that will fund future scientists. University of New Mexico
- ➤ The University of New Mexico launched a student-funded Bike Valet on Monday, Aug. 18th to offer free, staffed parking for bikes, e-bikes, scooters and other micromobility vehicles on Central Campus (located near Popejoy Hall and the Student Union Building); the pilot will run through July 30th while users register with a valid LoboCard and share feedback. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A Texas judge vacated the lesser prairie chicken’s endangered listing, which removed federal protections for the bird in its New Mexico habitat—prompting conservationists to fear that other at-risk species in the Permian Basin might face similar setbacks. Industry critics claim the decision supports oil and gas production while conservation groups consider an appeal. Source NM

- ➤ An arbitrator found New Mexico’s child welfare system has not made needed progress to meet a 2020 settlement as children remain at risk, and state officials plan to improve services by Dec. 31. The state will review progress in hearings scheduled for October and November + officials promise to address these issues. Source NM
- ➤ On August 20, Rep. Vasquez met local police leaders in Albuquerque to push for safe gun storage laws that protect children, regulate social media that encourages violence, and shift funds from immigration enforcement to local public safety. Local officials raised concerns over mental health care funding and case processing while noting stolen guns are sold on Telegram + Vasquez said his office will drop national news on his plan next Monday.
