CRIME NEWS

  • Today, the Albuquerque Police Department is hosting a gun buyback event at the APD University Substation—west of Isotopes Park—with New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence. Residents can turn in unloaded firearms in exchange for cash and sports tickets while the guns are dismantled on site and repurposed, except for those that are 3D printed.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 11th Annual Bosque Chile Fest is happening today at Expo New Mexico in the Villa Hispana area and will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.—guests can sample local chile dishes and try making their own chile ristras. Tickets cost $5 with tax and fees while children 12 and under get free entry.  KOAT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Castelion Corporation, a California-based defense technology company, said Friday it was evaluating a 1,000-acre site in Rio Rancho in Sandoval County for a hypersonic rocket motor production facility—if approved, the project will create up to 300 high-paying jobs and generate more than $659 million in economic output over the next decade.  Sandoval Signpost

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, University Communication and Marketing launches Lobos: United for Safety to teach the UNM community about campus safety measures—explaining how to use tools like LoboAlerts and LoboGuardian to stay alert. The series will run weekly for the next two months to provide clear safety information for students, staff, and nearby residents.  University of New Mexico
  • Rio Rancho Public Schools uses a strong security team and Evolv weapons detection systems — similar to those at a major airport — to keep firearms off campuses, with no weapons found this school year. The district also works closely with Rio Rancho Police to train staff and promptly check any reports of suspicious behavior.  Sandoval Signpost
  • An Albuquerque Public Schools police officer entered a classroom with his gun drawn—stating he followed standard operating procedures—according to the district.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Bernalillo Public Schools announced that students in Grades 4 to 12 must use clear backpacks to help staff quickly check bags and keep students safe. Director of safety Thomas Maes, Jr. explained the policy is part of a layered approach to protection + includes measures like security cameras and locked entrances.  Sandoval Signpost

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, New Mexico transportation officials met with lawmakers where Amy Whitfield of the Target Zero initiative explained that the state — which recorded 4.97 pedestrian deaths per 100,000 residents in 2023 — is working to end traffic fatalities. City and state leaders are partnering near dangerous intersections, such as Central and Louisiana near the Albuquerque Rapid Transit stop, to install pedestrian HAWK beacons and traffic calming measures to boost safety.  Source NM
