CULTURE NEWS

  • At ABQ BioPark Zoo, three fuzzy flamingo chicks walked inside the wattled crane habitat area on Thursday—delighting about a dozen visitors.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • CNM, New Mexico's largest community college, is set to open its new state-of-the-art trade school after five years of planning and two years of construction as it nears its anniversary celebration—promising improved technical training for local students.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Today, the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences announced that Dr. Stephanie Moore and Dr. Victor Law were named fellows of Microsoft's AI Economy Institute—receiving $80,000 to support their work on creating courses about AI literacy and workplace ethics.  University of New Mexico
  • On Aug. 18, UNM hosted an ice cream social as part of Welcome Back Days while United Graduate Workers demonstrated to ask President Garnett Stokes for higher wages, better benefits and protections for international students—aiming to put faces to their bargaining demands. About 100 students joined the protest as union stewards said the action was meant to humanize ongoing contract talks.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

  • Albuquerque is expanding its speed camera program by adding several more devices (to reduce speeding and prevent fatal crashes) after nearly half of its citations remain unpaid.  Albuquerque Journal
  • On Aug. 13, New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez and 35 other AGs sent a letter to Instagram raising public safety and data privacy concerns over its new live location sharing maps feature. The letter demands that the app prohibit minors from using the feature, provide clear alerts about its risks, and let users easily disable it—steps that Meta is now re-examining after reports of unconsented location sharing.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Mayor Tim Keller delivered the 25th State of the City address at the Albuquerque BioPark Botanic Garden on Aug. 23, outlining progress and challenges with addiction, homelessness, and immigrant protections while announcing initiatives such as a city-wide fee freeze, expanded community safety efforts, and a push to lead in quantum computing—local residents noted his track record since 2017 and his promise of further change.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

  • UNM Lobo Women’s Volleyball beat New Mexico Highlands with scores of 25-7, 25-15, 25-20 in an exhibition match on Aug. 23—marking their first season match. The team will play invitationals starting on Aug. 29 against Manhattan Jaspers, Northern Arizona University, and Houstoun Christian as they continue their season.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • On Friday, Aug. 22, the Albuquerque Isotopes rallied to beat the Las Vegas Aviators 8-7 at Isotopes Park—coming back from a 6-0 deficit to tie the series.
