Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 1st of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • As fall arrives with cooler days, local farmers and market organizers prepare for a harvest that uses both greenhouses and hand picking—red leaves and the aroma of roasting chile signal the season's change. Let’s Talk New Mexico will air Thursday at 8 a.m.—discussing the harvest shift, expected bounty, and worker availability.  KUNM

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested a man after he allegedly shot a man to death during an argument outside the Navajo Elks Lodge building Sunday morning—investigators are looking into what led to the fight.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On August 22, the Justice Department sent a memo to Congress — it stated it would not defend the Hispanic-Serving Institution designation for colleges in a lawsuit filed by Tennessee and Students for Fair Admissions. UNM and other HSI colleges, which use this status to access federal grants that support Hispanic and underrepresented students, may face challenges if the ruling leads to reduced funding.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 23, incumbent Mayor Keller delivered the State of the City address at Biopark Botanic Garden—challengers including Uballez, Sanchez, and Armijo said his speech focused on short-term crisis measures and personal achievements instead of long-term plans for homelessness, small business support, and curbing rising crime. The mayoral campaign moves forward as voting starts Oct. 18 and the municipal election is held on Nov. 4.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UNM Lobos football team played Michigan on Aug. 30 in Ann Arbor and lost 34-17, with Michigan’s freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood throwing for 251 yards + scoring key touchdowns. • The Lobos swept three matches at Johnson Gym during the Lobo Invitational from August 29-30—beating Manhattan, Northern Arizona, and Houston Christian—for a 3-0 start to their season. They will play Tarleton State on Sept 4 in Stephenville Texas.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
