CRIME NEWS

  • A man accused of rape who missed his 2020 arraignment was arrested Friday in Huntsville, Texas—he was returned to custody at Doña Ana County Detention.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Retired state police Lt. Carlos Antonio Perea, 56, was arrested on drug trafficking charges after officers found fentanyl in packages during a traffic stop in August—his arraignment is set for Friday, Sept. 5.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Range has played desert rock for 17 years as they mix classic and local styles to create a unique sound. Their next show is at The Block in Rio Rancho on September 12 — they will also perform in Texas with a well-known local band soon.  The Paper.
  • UNM professors Irene Vásquez and Ray Hernández-Durán have curated an exhibition featuring six New Mexican artists at the National Hispanic Cultural Center that highlights early Chicano activism—this project took seven years to build and received a 30,000 dollar grant from Albuquerque city council. The show includes a catalog with essays and eight public events and will close on Feb. 8.  University of New Mexico

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Albuquerque Downs is hosting the All American Futurity today for the second year after severe flooding damaged the Ruidoso track, affecting local business there while Albuquerque sees a boost from the influx of visitors. Race officials estimate the event will bring in nearly $1 million from hotels and restaurants, with the final race scheduled to start at 6:25 p.m.—local leaders hope the race returns to Ruidoso next year.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Albuquerque Police Department adopted AI technology from Peregrine Technologies to analyze crime trends and build suspect profiles—this system integrates with their real-time crime center and allows officers to prepare for dangerous calls more effectively.  KOAT
  • On Saturday, the state Department of Health issued an order to remove barriers and ensure quick access to new COVID vaccines at pharmacies by working with the Board of Pharmacy, with the vaccines expected within the next few weeks. Meanwhile, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued numerous executive orders for emergency spending to support recovery from wildfires and flooding, a move that has sparked concerns among legislators + accountability measures.  KUNM

  • UNM has released its non-conference schedule for the upcoming men's basketball season with both teams set to kick off unofficially on Oct. 4 at the Lobo Howl — a free exhibition event at The Pit. The schedule lists an exhibition game against Northern Arizona on Oct. 30 — along with matchups against seven teams before Mountain West play and participation in the Hall of Fame Classic at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.  KOAT
