- ➤ Albuquerque Public Schools police investigated vandalism at Dolores Gonzales Elementary School over Labor Day weekend, where several windows were struck by what appeared to be bullets—no one was injured. KOAT
- ➤ The New Mexico Department of Justice announced a plea agreement in the kidnapping and death of disabled woman Mary Melero near the Mexico border—Patricia Hurtado, who pleaded guilty to kidnapping, conspiracy to commit first-degree kidnapping, and Medicaid fraud, will testify against Angelina Chacon, the caretaker accused of abusing Melero after border patrol found her in a van two years ago showing signs of harm. - ➤ The New Mexico State Fair will open tomorrow at 10 a.m. with new security measures including an AI-driven weapon detection system and high-definition cameras scanning both inside and outside the fairgrounds. - ➤ City officials kept six finished watchdog investigative reports on City Hall under wraps despite a $30,000 review, and Gov. Lujan Grisham announced a $120 million federal quantum computing partnership aimed at boosting local innovation — and she approved $1.5 million in emergency funds for Mora County flood recovery. The criminal charge against fighter Jon Jones for leaving an accident scene was dismissed after his alibi defense proved credible. KUNM
- ➤ Documents showed that FEMA cut $14 million from New Mexico’s promised Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds for flooding relief after the South Fork and Salt fires near Ruidoso, reducing the amount from $30 million to $16 million. Officials said the funding loss left less money for new projects to reduce disaster risks—this follows additional cuts from a separate federal program. Source NM
