  • On Thursday, the New Mexico State Fair opened in the International District with the smell of turkey legs and carnival games drawing visitors—organizers said they face challenges securing a long-term site for the fair.  Albuquerque Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Nine windows at an elementary school in the Barelas neighborhood were damaged by gunfire over the holiday weekend—police are investigating the incident.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of New Mexico researchers are hosting IEEE Quantum Week this week in Albuquerque to share new advances in quantum computing. Faculty and partners from Sandia, Los Alamos, and the new QNM-I are leading panels and workshops - boosting New Mexico's role in quantum science and economic growth.  University of New Mexico
  • New Mexico’s Public Education Department shared its initial $5.09 billion FY27 budget request at a meeting in Gallup — the plan focuses on teacher recruitment and training even though it leaves out extra compensation and parts of a court-ordered equity plan. Education Secretary Mariana Padilla said the request also allocates funds for literacy, math and STEAM programs — with K-12 Plus funding to be finalized in October.  Source NM

  • City officials announced on Thursday upgrades to East Central—Albuquerque's deadliest corridor for pedestrians—to improve safety for those walking on the street.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced a special session will start October 1 to address federal budget cuts — lawmakers are set to meet and plan strategies to reduce the cuts' impact on state services.  Albuquerque Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico’s Schwoebel Lab received a $1.56 million NIH award to build a new 3D mammography system that uses a stationary multi-X-ray source to reduce scan times and lower costs. The team will test the design in clinical trials to improve early breast cancer detection—promising clearer images and less discomfort for patients.  University of New Mexico
  • September marks National Preparedness Month and Albuquerque residents are advised to prepare for disasters by checking local risks, stocking up on food, water, and medicine, and securing important documents—residents should also sign up for weather alerts to stay safe.  KOAT
