Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 6th of September.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Creamland Dairy workers at the Albuquerque and Farmington plants went on strike Wednesday night, with seventy-seven employees saying the company stalled talks for a new union contract that would raise wages and improve conditions (a claim made by Teamsters Local 492). Production of dairy products including green chile dip dropped as union officials said workers would not return until the company bargains in good faith (wage issues remain at the center of the dispute).  KUNM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ACE Leadership High School in Albuquerque installed two metal detectors and a bag scanner to boost campus safety, and school officials said they worked with parents and staff to set up easy checkpoints that do not feel like airport screening—sparking talk of similar upgrades at other schools.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The old cottonwoods in the Rio Grande bosque showed signs of drought stress last summer with yellowing leaves and more fallen branches, and officials noted that some trees have begun to decline. Rio Grande Nature Center staff planted new saplings to build a mixed, resilient forest—ensuring the bosque endures despite a changing climate.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ACLU filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming that Paulo Cesar Gamez Lira, a 28-year-old DACA recipient and father of four, is being held without cause at New Mexico’s largest ICE detention center in Chaparral — his arrest on Aug. 13 in Horizon City caused a dislocated shoulder and the suit names several federal officials. The suit argues that his indefinite detention violates his rights despite his long-term protections under DACA.  Source NM
  • New Mexico in Focus is covering Albuquerque’s mayoral race this week as interviews with candidates Daniel Chavez and Eddie Varela on crime and housing issues and a segment on public financing featuring only incumbent Mayor Tim Keller set the stage—additional segments will highlight state budget history and a student documentary on Unit 731.  University of New Mexico
