CRIME NEWS
- ➤ PNM warned customers about a rise in copper theft during Copper Theft Awareness Month—reporting 110 incidents in 2024 that led to power outages, costly repairs, and dangerous conditions. The utility urged homeowners and businesses to install lights, cameras, and barriers to protect copper wiring and transformers. KOAT
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UNM University Libraries has launched a self-paced Zotero tutorial to help students and faculty collect and organize research materials effectively. Associate Professor Todd Quinn developed the guide with clear text and images—providing an easy way to manage citations for improved research. University of New Mexico

- ➤ A home surveillance camera in Albuquerque captured a bright light early Sunday morning just before 2:30 a.m.—KOAT 7 Chief Meteorologist Byron Morton said it was likely a meteor falling through the sky. KOAT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ UNM led by Professor Marek Osinski got a $4M NSF grant to design a photonic quantum computer that works at room temperature. The team began work in August 2024 and will use help from labs such as Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs to build a chip that may boost computing power—promising a significant step forward in quantum research. - ➤ The governor announced that starting this fall New Mexico will launch a universal child care system that offers free care for all families—making it the first state in the nation to do so. Albuquerque Journal
- ➤ Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said that starting November 1, all families will get free child care if the legislature approves full funding — the plan will cost about $600 million a year and raise the budget by $130 million to $150 million. Parents are happy with the announcement as the state will soon share how to get the care. KOAT
