- ➤ Taylor Rolan became New Mexico State Fair Queen on Sunday at Tingley Coliseum, carrying on a family legacy as her mother once did. The NMSU student was chosen by a three-person panel for her skills in horsemanship, public speaking, and interviews (she studies animal science with minors in biology and chemistry). KOAT
- ➤ The New Mexico State Fair Junior Livestock Sale raised $738,700—second highest in its history—with FFA and 4-H youth preparing their animals for the event, and Samuel Fodge’s steer brought the top price of $29,000. - ➤ Two companies in Albuquerque and Las Cruces will lay off 225 workers over the next several weeks, state workforce filings show — the job cuts will affect both local offices. Albuquerque Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of New Mexico’s Passport Center, located in the bookstore near the Mercado at 2301 Central Ave., N.E., helps students, staff, and Albuquerque visitors with passport applications, renewals, and photos while funding student scholarships for international travel. It operates Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with walk-in hours and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—processing over 5,500 applications last year and offering a personal service as noted by lead agent Linda Contreras Ridlington. - ➤ On Sept. 3, AAPIRC reopened its office in Mesa Vista Hall after 18 months of renovations that followed the demolition of its former College of Education classroom building—transformed into a green space. - ➤ The Lobo Aquatic Club hosted the Jeff Mortensen Memorial Open swim meet at UNM Seidler Natatorium on Sept 13-14 where swimmers set new personal best times and more than 400 people attended. Coach Jarrod Trainor (in his final year as head coach) led the team in honoring Jeffrey Mortensen (a longtime club member who died in 2016) as the club prepares to compete at the Four Corners Aquatic Team Fall Open on Sept 20-21. - ➤ The Lobo football team beat the Bruins 35—10 at Rose Bowl Stadium on Sept. 12, marking its first win over a Big Ten opponent and its first victory against a Power Conference team since 2008—showing aggressive play with early trick plays and a dominant run game with 298 yards.
