COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Albuquerque organizers offer park and ride tickets for Balloon Fiesta Park through four locations—Cottonwood Mall, Coronado Center, Hoffmantown Church and Intel—with each $25 ticket including admission. Bus service will start from remote lots at 4 a.m. or 5:30 a.m. in the morning and at 3 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. in the evening, and there will be no service on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.  KOAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of New Mexico is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 with many events that honor the history and culture of Hispanic and Latinx communities—these include film screenings, lectures and special celebrations that trace back to a recognition week started in 1968.  University of New Mexico
  • Scribendi, a national literary magazine produced by UNM Honors College, is named a finalist for the 2025 Pacemaker award—winners will be announced on Oct. 18 in Washington. The current issue, Volume 39, was released on April 25 and the magazine is now accepting submissions for its 40th edition until Oct. 10.  University of New Mexico
  • Albuquerque band Sorry Guerro has energized live shows since 2013 with strong metal riffs and a party vibe that fills venues and excites fans. The band will work on a James Brown cover for Launchpad’s 2025 Night of The Living Cover Bands — a follow-up to their recent record release that continues their unique sound — as they prepare for another dynamic performance.  The Paper.
  • Albuquerque is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with events across the city from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15—Fiesta Mexicana at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and Hispanic Heritage Celebration at the Open Space Visitor Center are among the planned festivities. Other events include ¡Globalquerque! at Civic Plaza, Hispanic Heritage Awards at Crown Plaza, and Turkish Style Sunday Brunch at Raindrop to honor the Hispanic community.  KOAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Undergraduate students at UNM and CNM can now register for the 14th Annual App Contest hosted by UNM’s Office of the Chief Information Officer—students must sign up by Oct. 31 and can attend a kickoff session on Sept. 18 to prepare for the presentation and awards ceremony on Nov. 21 at UNM Rainforest.  University of New Mexico
  • A Legislative Finance Committee report found that early childhood care programs are having trouble meeting goals despite funding rising from less than $200 million to $918 million since 2012—issues include lower teacher preparation and fewer registered childcare homes. The report warns that enrollment gaps for low-income families persist as the state prepares to offer free universal child care on Nov.1.  Source NM
  • Researchers from the Smithsonian and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science discovered a more than 250-million-year-old plant in Socorro County — a finding that shows plant life existed long before dinosaurs roamed.  Albuquerque Journal
  • The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents reported on Sept 11 a 10% drop in fall enrollment—about 365 fewer students and a $3.3 million revenue loss—after a cyberattack in April disrupted recruitment efforts. Interim President Christopher Maples said the decline, which cut credit hours by 3,300 compared to last year, will lead the university to enhance student support in registration and financial aid.  KOAT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tribal leaders, including Pojoaque Pueblo Governor Jenelle Roybal, flew over Chaco Culture National Historical Park on Sept. 14 to assess the impact of oil and gas development and the threats to the sacred site. They will meet with lawmakers in Washington D.C. this week to secure a buffer zone—supporting the protection of Pueblo heritage.  Source NM

  • Applications for New Mexico’s new child advocate position opened Friday for an independent oversight office created to improve the state’s child welfare system. The role, attached to the state Department of Justice, requires candidates with at least five years of experience and offers a six-year term—resumes are accepted through the end of October amid leadership shifts at CYFD.  Source NM
  • BernCo officials are working on a project to improve traffic safety on Coors between Gun Club and Blake roads in response to South Valley residents' concerns—officials say plans will be finalized and implemented soon.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Mayoral candidate Alex Uballez visited the UNM Student Union Building on September 10th when he engaged with students — answering questions about voter cynicism and discussing plans to treat homelessness and mental health as medical conditions.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
