CULTURE NEWS

  • Two UNM professors are reviving the overlooked legacy of Chicano and Chicana art with an exhibit at the National Hispanic Cultural Center until February 8 — and they will also offer related lectures and a catalog from UNM Press to document the movement.  KUNM
  • McCall’s Pumpkin Patch in Moriarty will open on Sep. 20 so visitors can pick pumpkins that weigh up to 40 pounds and enjoy hay rides—new mini-excavators let guests try a digging zone for added fun. The Haunted Farm will launch its corn maze and barn attractions on Sep. 26 through Nov. 1 with tickets available online.  The Paper.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Garnett Stokes, UNM's 23rd and first female president, announced in an email on Sept. 16 that she will retire at the end of the 2025-26 school year after eight years in office—she plans to begin a new chapter with her husband as the Board of Regents prepares to search for her successor.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Adaptive grazing is gaining traction as New Mexico ranchers shift to more sustainable practices to improve soil health and boost productivity. Sandi Wilkie near Carlsbad and Jack Chatfield at Triangle Ranch have used methods that mimic bison herd movements—helped by the Healthy Soil Program—to spread manure evenly and build drought resilience.  KUNM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Albuquerque mayoral hopeful Patrick Sais was disqualified after his nomination petition failed to collect the required 3,000 valid signatures—confirmed by the Bernalillo County Clerk’s office today. He had faced scrutiny for making false biographical claims on his campaign website.  The Paper.
  • The New Mexico Foundation for Open Government has filed lawsuits against UNM and NMSU to request revenue-sharing records for student athletes—cases that remain in the early stages. The lawsuits are set to move forward in court as more details are expected.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Pueblo leaders and three congressional delegation members spoke in front of the Capitol building Tuesday morning to ask for permanent protections around Chaco Canyon by urging a ban on oil drilling.  Albuquerque Journal
  • The City Council approved a $777 million bond + $10 million in expansion incentives to bid for a nuclear fusion site that promises energy several times stronger than current nuclear power while avoiding long-lasting radioactive waste.  Albuquerque Journal
  • City Councilor Dan Lewis introduced an emergency resolution on Aug. 18 to spend $2 million from city reserves to fix parks with dead turf and overgrown weeds — he blamed budget cuts even though records show park funds increased and officials said weather and staffing issues played a role.  The Paper.
