- ➤ Eleven new special shape balloons will fill the sky at this year's Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta — a display that continues the event’s tradition of creative designs and attracts local visitors. Albuquerque Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Seventeen-year-old Gabrielle Montoya from Valencia County became the first teen woman to earn the Eagle Scout rank after five years of community service—she completed a project turning old tires into dog beds for the local animal shelter. Her uniform displays over 40 merit badges that mark her skills from first aid to space exploration—she works toward a career as a veterinarian. KOAT
- ➤ The New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department invites child care providers to two virtual town halls on Zoom to learn about the state’s universal child care rollout that begins Nov. 1—Friday’s session runs from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. and Saturday’s from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Providers may submit questions ahead of time while an official rule-making hearing is set for Oct. 9 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. KOAT
- ➤ Registration is open until Oct. 10 for UNM Office of Institutional Analytics and Office of Assessment Academic Program Review's Art and Science of Data event. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Last month, rainstorms damaged at least 36 acequias in Taos, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties—costing millions in damage and placing farmers at risk of losing two growing seasons. Acequia advocates said the floods cracked metal headgates and filled channels with silt, and they urged state or federal help to repair the historic irrigation systems. KUNM

- ➤ The New Mexico Department of Health has removed barriers so anyone 6 months and older can get a COVID-19 vaccine—officials say the change aligns with major medical groups and makes it easier for people to get a safe shot. KOAT
- ➤ New Mexico health officials reported that overdose deaths in Taos, Santa Fe and Rio Arriba counties rose sharply from July to September with a 340% increase in Taos County and most cases involving fentanyl—emergency visits also jumped and free naloxone is now being promoted. Source NM

- ➤ At the New Mexico Housing Summit in Albuquerque, speaker Todd Clarke estimated that the state is short more than 90,000 housing units — a figure based on analysis of apartment complexes and job growth — which means the shortage now poses a $27 billion challenge and Albuquerque may see up to 25,000 fewer units soon.
