COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UNM Alumni will host the Albuquerque Green Chile Roast on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 12 p.m. at Winrock Park and volunteers will bag both hot and medium chile as guests sample green chile cheeseburgers from Bubba’s 33—live music by Felix Y Los Gatos and limited-edition Alumni gear offering funds for student scholarships.  University of New Mexico

  • Highland High School alumni recalled their student days in 1955 when James Dean was a rebel and students rocked the tunes of Bill Haley & His Comets—stories that keep the spirit of that era alive.  Albuquerque Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of New Mexico Libraries announced a six-week AI and Pedagogy Fall Program that will help social science educators explore artificial intelligence in teaching. The virtual program runs Oct. 13 to Dec. 1 and gives each participant a ChatGPT Plus subscription while interested faculty and graduate students must apply by Sept. 29—applications are open to diverse social science disciplines.  University of New Mexico

  • New Mexico in Focus interviewed mayoral candidate Mayling Armijo and City Councilor Louie Sanchez as they discussed homelessness, housing, crime and economic opportunity. Host Nash Jones then headed to Expo New Mexico to cover Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s proposal to redevelop the State Fair site — while also featuring a segment on Dillon Christopher Chitto’s Pueblo Revolt comedy.  University of New Mexico
  • Veteran water expert Ted Cooke said his nomination to lead the federal water management agency was pulled after an unspecified issue with his background check — leaving the Bureau of Reclamation without permanent leadership as states work to reach a plan for sharing the Colorado River amid ongoing drought.   • New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Utah Governor Spencer Cox spoke at Notre Dame University on Friday, urging respectful debate over violence after commentator Charlie Kirk was killed—both stressed the need for bipartisan cooperation in a divided nation.  Source NM
  • Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller will face six challengers on November 4 as confirmed Friday by the Bernalillo County Clerk's Office—voters will soon choose the city's next leader.  Albuquerque Journal
  • Antonio Chairez Rios, a grandfather who has lived in Albuquerque for 20 years, had his ankle monitor removed at the ICE field office after a last-minute review approved his T visa application — giving him deferred action and a work permit. His lawyer said he now needs to check in only once a year and warned that many others remain at risk of deportation.  Source NM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the ninth annual Lobo Cancer Challenge begins at University Stadium in Albuquerque with races that include a 50-mile ride, a 25-mile ride, a 5K run/walk, a stair climb, and a Cub Pack Fun Run while families enjoy photo booths and face painting—registration closes at 7 a.m. and all funds go to the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, New Mexico’s only National Cancer Institute-designated center.  KOAT
  • UNM Hospital launched its Workplace Violence Program to protect health workers and help them report dangerous incidents using a secure alert system + metal detectors and badge alert buttons; hospital leadership, security, and UNM Police support these measures to ensure staff can work safely.  University of New Mexico
