Good morning, Albuquerque. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 22nd of September.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artists in New Mexico continue to preserve a generational art form—santos—by creating retablos, bultos and reredos that show the region's deep religious and cultural roots. Annual events like the Spanish Market support these artists who pass down traditional techniques to younger generations.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Art historian Bruno Pinheiro led a virtual show at the University of New Mexico Latin American and Iberian Institute on Sept. 19—presenting black and white prints by Mexican and African artists that tell the story of marginalized communities and their call for justice. He used modern technology to make the art accessible and spark a needed conversation on inequality.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • On Sept. 20, the team behind the Birth of the Acid Western held a fundraiser at the Albuquerque Press Club to support post-production of their documentary on filmmaker Orville Wanzer from NMSU—known for his surreal western films. Tintype portraits, student films, music and a raffle featured at the event to celebrate New Mexico's film history and encourage local independent filmmaking.  New Mexico Daily Lobo

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNM Center for Teaching and Learning will host a virtual dialogue series on disability and academia starting Sept. 29 from 10-11 a.m.—all UNM faculty are invited to join. Presidential Teaching Fellow Marissa Greenberg leads the series that will feature short readings to spark discussion on challenges in higher education.  University of New Mexico
  • Superintendent Gabriella Blakey set a revised Cabinet for APS for her second school year — including familiar officials in new roles and a few new faces — to lead New Mexico’s largest district.  Albuquerque Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In July, Congress voted to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and cut $1.1 billion in funding that supported over 1,200 public radio stations serving tribal and rural communities. Local stations now face challenges finding alternative funds—this may reduce local news, community music shows and emergency alerts.  KUNM
  • On Thursday afternoon in downtown Albuquerque, about 50 locals including House Speaker Martinez and Santa Fe Archbishop Wester gathered for a Global Day of Action to demand a ceasefire in Gaza—urging local lawmakers to support steps toward peace.  KUNM

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Albuquerque housing market remained stable, experts said, even as home prices kept rising after the Federal Reserve cut rates and the 30‑year fixed rate dropped to 2.26%. ERA Summit Agency owner Laura Garner explained that well‑priced homes sold quickly while overpriced ones lingered—providing little room for negotiation.  KOAT

SPORTS NEWS

  • University Stadium will host the 115th football clash on Sept. 27 as the Lobos face the Aggies while coaches Jason Eck and Tony Sanchez look for their first win in this long-standing rivalry. The game will test both teams in rushing and pass defense — the Lobos have limited penalties and the Aggies must improve their discipline to secure the win.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
  • Lobo freshman Emil Albers won the individual title with a score of 13 under par at the invitational held at The UNM Championship Course on Sept.19-20—he became the first freshman champion since Tiger Woods and set a program record for the lowest freshman score. The Lobos finished in second place behind Long Beach State and will next compete in Chicago for The Windon Memorial on Sept.29-30.  New Mexico Daily Lobo
